Seiichi Sugano Sensei moved like no one else in aikido. I can only describe it as an organic movement, that was free from style. His 7 count jo *pattern is a lovely, flowing movement with a depth that belies its simplicity. Legend has it, O'Sensei taught him the 7 jo kata before he left for Australia in 1965.
*Sugano Sensei preferred to call his weapons movement a pattern, because kata inferred the moves were fixed. Sugano believed our aikido is as unique as the person and should evolve. Different teachers teach the same technique in different ways.
Sugano started in judo, and joined as an uchi deshi at hombu ~ 1958. He taught with Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan at the New York Aikikai.
Sugano Sensei passed away in 2010. (Aikido journal Stan Pranin)
