About Aikidokee
Aikidokee was originally created as a space for exploring and learning aikido technique.
Aikidokee is now synonymous for 'a way to learn basics' in any art or skill. It works best with a finite group of basics such as guitar chords or Auslan alphabet.
Back in 2010, when I was training for Shodan, I would sketch mind maps that grouped and linked attacks and defences for the multitude of techniques required for grading. I found it easier (and with better retention) to go through one attack with multiple defences, which I did as solo kata. These mind maps are now in essence the free PDF infographic downloads for each grading.
Aikido cards combine my passion for simplicity as a designer and my obsession with aikido. Aikido for me has to be fun, but it also must be martial, otherwise we are deluding ourselves. I don't consider myself an expert – but I have ideas about what works for me. It might work for you too.
I've been training for over 25 years within the Aikikai, however I am humbled every time I practice with my highly skilled instructors (shihan/master teachers) in Clifton Hill, Melbourne, Australia. There is a mutual respect amongst trainees - we are all seeking improvement of the self by looking after each other on the mat.
Today, my aikido is formed by many masters, most of whom trained under Sugano Shihan for over 50 years. The foundation he established in Australia prior to his death, continues to promote Sugano Sensei's aikido legacy internationally.
Seiichi Sugano Sensei (1939-2010), who was the pinnacle of what makes a great master, is still a major influence on my aikido, because he had a natural energy and dynamic technique that was pure body movement. Legend has it, that O'Sensei personally showed him the 7-jo-kata in the office at Hombu (Shinjuku, Japan) before departing for Australia in 1965. We've been practicing it ever since!
